About Microsoft Email Clients

Now let’s talk further. As I stated earlier that email service only requires a computer system connected with the internet, but you need to use a webmail client to send and receive email messages. There are various email clients and email migration service which is excessively used for emailing. But desktop email clients are quite popular among users. Whenever we talk about such email clients, the first name which comes into our minds is Microsoft.

We all know that Microsoft is a giant in the software industry. It provides countless software applications all around the world. Few popular email clients are also provided by Microsoft for Windows users. Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are few common but popular email clients used by millions of email users. Due to different email clients, we must know how to do email migration.

Types of Email Client Application

Microsoft Outlook
Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is one of the most popular email clients provided by any software company. It is not just an email client application; in fact, it is a personal storage table provided by Microsoft. It provides a wide range of features other than emails, such as calendaring, contacts management, task management, notes taking, journal creation and many more including web browsing. It is available in the Microsoft Office suite and as a separate application as well. To send and receive email messages by using Outlook, it is required to configure at least one email account. Each email account has its own PST file.

Outlook Express
Outlook Express

Another email client provided by Microsoft is Outlook Express. Though it has been now discontinued, it is still used by home users who are running Windows XP or any earlier Windows version. Outlook Express is still included with Internet Explorer versions 4.0 through 6.0, but now these versions are rarely used by Windows users. Outlook Express also requires at least one email account in order to send and receive email messages. Unlike Microsoft Outlook which stores the entire mailbox in the PST file, it creates separate DBX folders for storing email messages, i.e. Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, Drafts.dbx, and Deleted Items.dbx. There is also one more folder, i.e. Folders.dbx that stores the master index for all the mailboxes.

Windows Mail
Windows Mail

After the launch of Windows Vista, the old email client, i.e. Outlook Express, was replaced by Windows Mail. It is an email and newsgroup client provided by Microsoft. Unlike Outlook Express which is available with various Internet Explorer versions, Windows Mail is only available for Windows Vista. In order to use this client software, an email account should be configured with it. It stores email messages in separate email files saved with.EML extension.

Windows Live Mail
Windows Live Mail

The current freeware email client program for Windows users is Windows Live Mail which is available for Windows 7 or later versions. It is the successor to Windows Mail on Windows Vista. Windows Live Mail is the part of Windows Live Essential which is a freeware program. Unlike Windows Mail and Outlook Express, it doesn’t look like a desktop email client. Like other Microsoft Email clients, it also requires an email client by which it can send and receive email messages. Being a web-based application, all the email messages are stored on Microsoft Server instead of a local computer. Like Windows Mail, it also stores email messages in separate EML files. Here the need for email migration service arises.

As time passes, technology gets better and better. People who are using old email clients switch to new ones for any personal reason or corporate constraint. Outlook Express creates DBX folders to store mailbox data. Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail save email messages in EML format.
